TELEPHONE TIPS
Obtaining a Price Quote
The only way to know for sure that your medicines are available in Mexico, and at a price attractive enough to afford a trip, is to telephone a farmacia in Mexico and ask. Before you reach for the receiver, some preparation is in order. Many tourist oriented pharmacies have at least one salesperson who
speaks acceptable English. However when you call, that person may be busy with a customer, off on a break or suffering from an acute case of laryngitis. To clarify things, having a FAX machine nearby and at the ready is indispensable. If spelling your prescription for Acetaltehydraphenadrenaphodaline gets hung up on the vowels, sending the formula name by FAX will instantly
clarify things. Just don’t expect them to FAX or telephone you back, the burden of communication rests on your shoulders. Calls to Mexico typically cost fifty cents a minute, definitely affordable if it enables you to save several hundred dollars. Before you hang up, ask the salesperson about using your credit card for purchases.
Note that the area codes are all 3 digits EXCEPT for Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and their surroundings. These regions have only 2 digit area codes BUT the local numbers consist of 8 digits. For all other cities, the three digit code is followed by a seven digit local number.
Examples of how to dial a number in San Felipe. If you are in another city in Mexico and you wish to call our office at The Net (577-1600) , you would dial:
national long distance code+area code+7 digit number
01-686-577-1600
If you are in the USA you would dial:
international access code +country code+area code+7 digit number
011-52-686-577-1600
The telephone company in the San Felipe region of Baja California, Telnor, has put plenty of pay telephones in town and they are easy to use. At this time the wired system extends only from the Arches at the north, to the Harbor in the south. Push the little metal button with a flag engraved on it and the
payphone display will give you instructions in English. Phone cards, which use the latest digital chip technology, can be bought at many stores in denominations of 25, 35 and 50 pesos (about $3-6) and are a very convenient way of making both local and long distance calls. To call the USA or Canada from San Felipe dial 001+area code+number.
If you have a cellular telephone, you can use it to roam in San Felipe. Follow Me Roaming can be activated each day by dialing *18 send. This will forward US calls to you in San Felipe but you will incur costs of the long distance and roaming fees. Roaming fees are about $2/day plus 40¢/min. If you are staying for some time, you might want to get your
cellular telephone activated for local service by Baja Celular or Telcel. (For the latest information from Baja Celular and their rates, check their web site http://www.bajacelular.com.mx/main.html (in Spanish). Check Telcel at http://www.telcel.com/). Baja Celular has a new plan in which they will assign you a local number and give you 100 minutes of airtime for a total cost
of around $12 per month. Additional airtime is about 15¢ per minute. You cannot use this service to roam outside San Felipe. The charges, plus long distance costs are charged to your credid card. Visit the friendly, bilingual, staff at the office on Calzada Chetumal. A regular cellular account (which allows roaming in the USA and other parts of Mexico) costs around $90 to hook
up and $26/month for service. Airtime costs $0.20/minute day or night. You will need a US credit card and credit check for this regular service. Long distance charges are lowest 7pm to 7am, all day Saturdays and till 4pm Sundays. A 5 minute cellular call to Los Angeles on a Saturday would cost about $3.60, about the same as a call from a pay phone. An incoming 5 minute call
will cost you the equivalent of about $2 in airtime. The cellular systems now cover you for the entire distance from Mexicali (with a few dead spots) to approximately km 35 to the south of town towards Puertecitos.
Be particularly careful if you decide to use one of the many independent phones in town which invite you to use a credit card or call collect to the USA or Canada. Charges for a 10 minute call to California can easily exceed $50.00. Find out exactly what the rates are before you place a call.
